I'm not sure why so many people are sleeping on Professor Layton as a Smash character. He's been requested since Brawl, and Akihiro Hino seems to be on board with Layton crossovers. Anyway, this is sort of the vision I have if he were to (and hopefully will) make it into Smash Bros Ultimate. This vision meant to capture the spirit of his games and to avoid making him just another swordfighter. I have taken reference from both the games and ideas already stated by the community.
Character Overview:
Layton is a semi heavy character. With weight around Ryu's weight, and is a bit faster than most of the fighters in his weight class. This speed translates to quicker rolls as well. Both of these aspects are due to him being shown to perform feats of athleticism in his games. We can assume he is a bit heavier, since he has been shown to possess the muscle needed to pull an entire person up by one arm, and to sucessfully block attacks from a massive axe being weilded by a knight three times his size. Since Layton regards fighting as a puzzle, it is only natural for him to think ahead and try to have the solution in sight. Therefore, his moves can easily combo into one another, and his playstyle rewards reads as well as other risks taken to land a combo. These combos, however, leave the Professor with a lot of end lag that can be punished if the opponent takes advantage of them.
Standard Attacks:
Dash: Layton lunges forward with a fencing sword, causing damage to the player hit by it. (In specific reference to Cutscene 23 from Miracle Mask). Does about 11% clean in a 1v1, 7% if late. In a Free-for-all, this changes to 8% clean, 5% late.
Neutral-A: Layton does a three hit jab corresponding to the "Puzzle Solved" animations found throughout the series. The usual three click sound effect is heard, with one click corresponding to each landed hit. The first jab has Layton bringing his arm up to his chin, creating a hitbox. The second jab is Layton tilting his hat down when thinking the puzzle over, and then back up again once he seems to have found the solution. The final jab is a finisher, with Layton pointing his finger outward in triumph. If this lands, then a shortened version of the "Puzzle Solved" jingle will play. (If playing on St. Mystere stage, then the puzzle jingle will be the one from Curious Village and DS games). If not, then the player will hear the familiar error buzz that plays when a part of a puzzle is failed. The finisher has slight knockback. This does about 2% on the first jab, 3% on the second, and 5% on the finisher in 1v1s; 1% on the first jab, 2% on the second, and 3% on the finisher in Free-for-alls.
Side-A: Professor Layton pulls a sliding puzzle out of his pocket, extending his arm out to present it to the opponent. The puzzle and his arm act as the hitbox. Does about 6% to 8% damage in 1v1s; 4% to 6% in Free-for-alls.
Up-A: Layton tilts his head up in fascination, causing his hat to act as a hitbox as he gives a small "huh?" or "oh!" while looking up. Can be chained into itself. Does 7% damage 1v1; 5% Free-for-all.
Down-A: The icon for a collectable item appears on the ground. Layton crouches down to pick it up, with his hand acting as a hitbox. Layton quickly pulls the item out of the ground and tucks it away in his coat. These items can be any of the many items from the games. Attack can be chained into itself yet not to the point of becoming crazy spammable. Does 7% damage in 1v1s and 5% damage in Free-for-alls.
Special attacks:
Neutral-B - Accusation: Layton throws an accusation out at the enemy. Usually followed by the famous "and that person is you!" from the Layton games. The pointing finger would act as the hitbox in this case. Has the chance to stun, but is very rare. If stunned, the enemy will remain stunned for about 2 to 3 seconds, but will come out of it immediately if attacked. This stun is meant to show surprise at the accusation, as has been displayed my many an accused in the Layton titles. Does about 6% to 8% damage in 1v1s, and 4% to 6% in Free-for-alls.
Neutral-B Variation 1 (suggested by u/-Dappertron-): Layton throws an accusation out at the enemy, as in the original attack. However, the move has a startup, like a Falcon Punch. Pointing finger is still hitbox, only now if the attack hits, then the opponent is stunned, rather than only having a chance to stun originally. Does 8% in 1v1s, 6% in Free-for-alls.
Side-B - Magnifying Glass: Professor Layton extends his arm out to look through a magnifying glass. If it hits, the magnifying glass icon from the Professor Layton games appears. This attack has three variations. The first and most common shows the maginfying glass icon with three lines above it, indicating you have interacted with something. If this hits, the sound effect from the games will play and the opponent will be hit. This variation does 8% in 1v1s and 6% in Free-for-alls. The second variation is more rare, and is modeled after the zooming magifying glass. This attack turns the magnifying glass icon blue and makes it grow, playing the respective sound and increasing your hitbox by a fair amount. This does 10% in 1v1s and 12% in Free-for-alls. The final and most rare variation shows the magnifying glass icon with an exclamation point. The sound for this icon plays and hits the opponent hard, causing devasting knockback, allowing for kills at earlier percents if you can land it. This attack does 12% in 1v1s and 10% in Free-for-alls.
Up-B - Bone Glider: Professor Layton pulls out his bone glider, from the Azran Legacy. A gust of wind lifts him up into the air. The height is a bit lower than average, considering Layton's weight, but this move is completely controllable when it comes to direction. Can be used offensively, in a manner similar to Peach's umbrella. The glider eventually disappears after a short while. If it lands all its hits, it has the potential to do up to 11% in 1v1s and 9% in Free-for-alls.
Down-B - Time for Tea!: Professor Layton pulls out the tea set from Pandora's Box and starts to brew a pot of tea. This a somewhat long process, which leaves you very vulnerable, (you can't rush good tea) but the rewards are great. It would be rather strange and excessive to include all 12 of the recipes from the original game, so I've only included the one I think is most important; The Layton Elixir. The Layton Elixir takes about 5 seconds to brew, with another 2 second required to drink it when it is held, either of which can be stopped at anytime with an attack, forcing Layton to brew his tea anew, so can really only be done when opponents are off stage. It grants Layton a heal of 12% or a temporary buff to damage adding about 2% to each one of his moves for about 10 seconds.
Grab Animation:
Professor Layton grabs the opponent by the wrist, and the icon of the magnifying glass being held by a hand (usually seen in the games when the player is using the stylus to move around the touch screen) starts to hover over the opponent until Layton throws them. If Layton is running, he will move forward to grab the opponent, and in case of a pivot grab, then Professor Layton will quickly turn around and grab the opponent.
Pummel:
The magnifying glass icon hovering over the opponent appears to be tapped on, causing damage. Does 3% in 1v1s, and 2% in Free-for-alls.
Throws:
Up throw: Professor Layton throws the opponent up into the air, with the magnifying glass icon appearing to drag the opponent up. This is meant to give the appearance that a player is moving the opponent with their (3)DS stylus, like a layton game. Does 5% in 1v1s, which changes to 3% in Free-for-alls.
Forward throw: The Robot-Dog appears from behind Layton, lunging at the opponent, in search of a hint coin. When he hits the opponent, the hint coin icon appears and the sound effect plays, the force of the Dog's lunge sending the opponent flying forward. In specific reference to the Gizmos minigame from Curious Village. Does 6% in 1v1s, which changes to 4% in Free-for-alls.
Back throw: Professor Layton takes a step back and turns in surprise to reveal Emmy Altava standing behind him, delivering one of her signature roundhouse kicks to send the opponent flying. Does 5% in 1v1s, which changes to 3% in Free-for-alls.
Down throw: Professor Layton moves his trunk down onto the floor , searching through it for a puzzle and then closing it after finding it. The downward slamming trunk hits the opponent and sends them flying upward. Does 7%, which changes to 5% in Free-for-alls.
Aerials:
Neutral Aerial: Professor Layton pulls out the pipe from both Azran Legacy and Eternal Diva, and does a quick swing forward and backward. This move comes out very quickly, and does 7% in 1v1s, which changes to 5% in Free-for-alls.
Up Aerial: Professor Layton does a swinging point upward, ending in him finding a hint coin, playing the small ding from the games. The arm and finger act as the hitbox. Does 8% damage in 1v1s, which changes to 6% damage in Free-for-alls.
Forward Aerial: Professor Layton presents the toy car, which charges up to speed forward before exploding into a mess of gears and springs before it leaves the Professor's hand. Does 5% to 7% in 1v1s, depending on whether or not the explosion hits. This changes to 3% to 5% in Free-for-alls.
Back Aerial: Professor Layton turns his head and back back to see behind him, as if surprised, his arm holding his trunk and swinging back a bit, causing the trunk to hit the opponent behind him. This delivers 7% damage in 1v1s, which changes to 5% in Free-for-alls.
Down Aerial: Professor Layton swings his trunk downward, hitting the opponent below him. If this attack hits with the trunk's sweet spot, then it will spike. Does 8% damage in 1v1s, which changes to 6% in Free-for-alls.
Smash Attacks:
Side-smash: Professor Layton pulls out the slot machine gun from Unwound Future and starts to pull on the arm of the gun, charging the attack. When the gun is fired, a barrage of coins are launched at any opponents in range. The strength and distance of the attack depend on how long it is charged. At max charge, the range and duration are similar to the Mii Gunner side smash. When the attack is fully charged, the five number slots on the side will max out to 99999, indicating a jackpot. Does anywhere from 8% to 23%, which changes to 6% to 20% in Free-for-alls. This depends on how long the opponent is hit by coins, and how close to the gun's barrel they are, and how charged the attack is.
Up-smash: Professor Layton will start building the camera from Pandora's box while he charges the attack. If the smash is done without charging, then layton will simply pull the camera out. He holds it above him at an angle, and snaps a photo, causing a large flash to appear, which acts as the hit box. This attack does anywhere from 16% to 22% depending on charge. This changes to 14% to 20% in Free-for-alls.
Down-smash: Professor Layton calls upon Aurora to raise an Azran pillar, encasing the opponent in it before delivering a strong blow with an archeologist's pickaxe, sending the opponent flying. Does 17% to 23%, depending on charge, changing to 15% to 21% in Free-for-alls.
Final Smash:
FS Possibility 1 - Puzzle Solved!: The Layton
(L) logo appears as if a puzzle were to begin, pulling in opponents it hits and pulling them into the center. The screen turns black and Professor Layton does his signature correct animation, his finger pointing at the opponents trapped in the final smash, causing 40% damage and launching them upwards due to the hitbox already being close to the stage ceiling. If using the FS meter, the damage changes to 21% and launch is drastically reduced.
FS Possibility 2 - And That Person Is...: Professor Layton points, the hitbox catching people in front of him. The captured opponents then appear seated on a couch, in a rather elegant looking main room. Flora is seated beside them, and other Layton characters such as Luke, Emmy, Grosky, Inspector Chelmey, etc. This FS mimics the accusation scene from Pandora's Box. If one person is caught, Layton will say "Someone here has masterminded an awful scheme..." "And that person is you!" If several people are caught, Layton will say "Some people here have masterminded an awful scheme..." "And those people are there!" He will point at the opponent(s), causing them and the rest of the people around to act shocked, causing 40% damage and launching the player to the right. If done through FS meter, the damage is 21% and launch is drastically reduced. All of this animation happens rather quickly as well, so as not to hold up the game.
FS Possibility Number 3 - Wrath of the Azran: Aurora appears in the middle of the stage, sending an army of Azran drones to sweep the stage. Those who are caught by the drones are then levitated up into the air as the stage beneath them starts to glow a bright purple-ish pink, followed by an explosion delivered to each opponent. This is a reference to Cutscene 24 from Azran Legacy. It does 40% damage and launches the player sideways left or right depending on the postion of the opponent on the screen, with this being changed to 21% and the launch reduced if it is performed using the FS meter.
FS Possibility Number 4 - Sliding Puzzle (idea suggested by u/JakeIsNotGross*):*
Professor Layton shatters the Smash Ball, separating the screen into a 3x3 sliding grid puzzle. The players are locked in specific pieces of the grid corresponding to their location on the screen, with the smash ball being placed into a piece as well. The puzzle is then mixed up, with the goal being to get the smash ball in the center and the opponents on the edge. The puzzle pieces start sliding up and down, left and right, causing damage to the opponents. The smash ball lands in the center, is stamped with the iconic
(L) logo, and all the opponents at the edge are launched in the direction closest to the blast zone. This does 40% damage, launching opponents. If activated by FS meter, this will do 20% damage and launch much less.
FS Possibility Number 5 - Ferris Wheel (idea suggested by u/MasacoMike*):*
The screen switches to show a Ferris Wheel, then cutting to the sinister figure, which uses the remote to pull the Ferris Wheel away from its moorings, causing it to barrel forward at a very high speed. Cut back to the stage, and a loud shaking rumble starts right before the Ferris Wheel barrels through the stage, taking all opponents caught in its path off the stage and into the blast zone. Does 45%, 23% with less launch if activated by a FS meter.
Misc. Animations:
Roll animation: Professor Layton grabs his top hat and does a basic roll in the direction indicated.
Spot dodge: Professor Layton leans back, arm up in front of him, to dodge the opponent's attack.
Air Dodge: Professor Layton does a simple air dodge in the direction indicated, holding onto his top hat.
Shield animation: Layton tilts the brim of his top hat down, his arm front of his face and other arm brought up against his chest.
Perfect Shield animation: Professor Layton brings both arms down to his sides, making fists while he tilts his head back up.
Stage Entrance: Two variations of this one. Layton may ride into battle in the Laytonmobile, getting out and causing it to drive off. The second, Professor Layton flies into battle in the Laytonmobile replica built by Don Paolo from Unwound Future, which he then gets out of, prompting it to fly away.
Taunts:
Up taunt: Professor Layton does his iconic correct animation, and, upon finishing it, says one of three phrases. These are as follows:
"Critical thinking is the key to success!" "Every puzzle has an answer!" "A true gentleman leaves no puzzle unsolved!"
Down taunt: Professor Layton does his explanation pose, remarking simply. "This reminds me of a puzzle..."
Side taunt: Professor Layton pulls out a simple sliding puzzle, solves it, and says "Oh, the joy of solving puzzles..."
Victory/Defeat animations:
Victory animation 1: Professor Layton does his correct animation, pointing toward the screen when it finishes.
Victory animation 2: Professor Layton tilts his hat forward with a small grin on his face.
Victory animation 3: Professor Layton inspects one of the collection items from the games with a magnifying glass.
Defeat animation: Layton does an entusiastic clap, applauding the player for their victory.
Possible Home Stages:
St. Mystere: The small town from the first game released in the Layton series. This will take the form of a town street below, with platforms formed by the roofs of buildings as well as canopies and other such things. Kind of like Onett.
The Airship Bostonius: A luxurious airship which would make for a great moving platform stage, with the fight going on on top of the blimp, the airship flying through Froenburg and other scenic locations from Azran Legacy. A Targent Airship or Descole could easily act as a stage boss for this one.
Azran Sanctuary: The battle takes place just outside the entrance of the santuary as it floats over Froenburg. Being just outside the entrance allows you to see Aurora floating inside. When she gets possessed by the Voice of the Azran, she will act as a stage boss, using Azran tech to fight against you.
Gressenheller University: A simple stage, taking place in the main courtyard of the university, with students cheering on in the background. It has three platforms.
Monte d'Or: A colorful and vibrant stage. It takes place on a platform floating above the city, much like New Donk City in SSBU. It starts at Carnival square and shows the town in celebration, with bright lights and cheering people everywhere. The Masked Gentleman can appear as a stage boss.

Luke Triton Alternate Color: A light blue coat and top hat, olive green pants, brown shoes, and a white shirt.
Emmy Altava Alternate Color: A bright yellow coat, top hat, and pants, along with a white shirt and black shoes.
Young Layton: From Miracle Mask, with different voice and sometimes different phrases. This look consists of Layton wearing a white shirt, with an open red vest over it and a blue tie, along with black pants and brown dress shoes. Gone is the top hat, replaced by Layton's messy hairstyle.
Young Adult Layton: From Unwound Future, also with it's own voice lines and phrases based on the games. This look consists of Professor Layton wearing a white shirt, with a closed red vest over it, as well as a white scarf which is tucked into the vest. The pants are black and the shoes are brown dress shoes. Once again, the top hat is absent from this look, replaced by a red golf hat.
Descole Alternate Color: A dark grey coat, as well as matching pants. The top hat is dark grey with a purple ribbon to replace the original red one. The shirt is a lighter grey, and the shoes are a dark brown with grey toe caps.
Masked Gentleman Alternate Color: A white suit, from shoes to coat. The shirt however, is a light purple, and the top hat is white with a green ribbon.
Leon Bronev Alternate Color: A navy blue coat, along with a red shirt. The top hat is also navy blue with a red ribbon. THe pants are white, along with brown shoes.

Most if not all of these trophies will have descriptions similar to their descriptions in their respective games. Perhaps the language used will be tweaked a bit to match Smash's tone.
Possible Assist Trophies:
These are my ideas for possible assist trophies. None of these are particularly hard to come across through normal gameplay.
Luke Triton: Pulls out the hamster from Curious Village, launching an apple at an opponent and sending the hamster off to bite the opponent. This is a multi-hit attack, and can only be ended if Luke is KO'd. The hamster can only be shaken off. Once the hamster is on, the opponent must shake him off, or suffer 1% every hit. The hamster attacks at about 3 hits per second.
Emmy Altava: Runs around the stage, grabbing an opponent before pushing them back and delivering a firm, quick roundhouse kick. May be ended if Emmy is KO'd. This is a single hit attack that does 7% damage, but has slightly higher knockback than most other assist trophies.
Don Paolo: Builds his replica Laytonmobile and starts flying along the stage clumsily, bumping into opponents. It is quick, and strong, but doesn't last very long due to the poor construction. This attack does 4% for every hit landed.
Professor Sycamore: Walks along the stage, grounding opponents (can be escaped, btw) and then kneeling down, brushing them off with an archeologist's brush and finally pulling them out by means of a hammer and chisel. This attack does 3% from the grounding, and if the rest of the move connects, it does 2% from the brushing and 2% from the hammer and chisel. As expected, it doesn't really send opponents flying.
Easter Eggs:
Not sure if any of these easter eggs will make a comeback, but I've decided to make a Codec Call and Palutena's Guidance for him, as well as explain an idea I have for an Easter egg Layton could possibly perform.
Palutena's Guidance: Pit: What's up with the guy in the top hat?
Palutena: That, Pit, is Professor Layton. He is a globally recognized puzzle solver and archeologist, having gained fame for his many academic accomplishments and love for puzzles.
Pit: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think puzzles have anything to do with fighting.
Palutena: Don't get too confident, Pit. Battles are, in a way, like puzzles. Since Professor Layton has an outstanding mind for puzzles, that means he'll mostly always be one step ahead.
Viridi: Hmph, if it's a battle of brains, then Pit doesn't stand a chance.
Pit: Hey!
Palutena: Viridi has a point, Pit. If you want to stand a chance at beating Professor Layton, you have to stay alert and plan every move carefully. One mistake and he can easily use it to your disadvantage.
Pit: Oh... my head hurts....
Palutena: Focus, Pit. Fight smart, and this battle may turn out in your favor.
Snake Codec Call: Snake: Otacon, who's the guy in the hat?
Otacon: That's Professor Hershel Layton, Snake. He's an archeologist and puzzle solver of world-renowned fame, as well as a professor at the prestigious Gressenheller University in London.
Snake: What's an archeologist in a funny hat doing on a battlefield?
Otacon: Don't let the hat fool you. That is a man of powerful intellect, Snake. Professor Layton's mind is his most powerful weapon. He has proven it time and time again, foiling the plots of multiple villians, as well as playing an intregal part in unlocking the secrets of the ancient Azran civilization.
Snake: So he's smart. He doesn't look like much of a fighter.
Otacon: Careful, Snake. Battles are puzzles like any other, and Professor Layton rarely fails to find a solution. His mind allows him to evenly match any foe, so expect the unexpected.
Snake: I'll keep an eye out.
Easter Egg Idea - Layton's Journal
It's only logical Professor Layton would read up on and research his opponents before facing them head on. This easter egg would be executed in the same way as a Codec Call or Palutena's Guidance would; Layton would do his down taunt on his home stage. This will trigger a conversation between Luke and Layton, discussing the figher, what weapons they are equipped with, their notable accomplishments or background, as well as the best strategies for beating them. Stylewise, it will look identical to a normal Layton game, dialogue bubbles and all.
An example of what a Layton's Journal Entry would look like with fighter number 60, Ryu: Luke: Wow, Professor! This fighter sure looks strong.
Layton: He certainly does, Luke. This is Ryu, an incredibly well known fighter from Japan, who seeks to become a stronger fighter by wandering the globe searching for people to challenge.
Luke: He does appear to put a lot of effort into his fighting.
Layton: Most definitely. Such strong dedication is what has allowed Ryu to master such fearsome moves as his fiery Hadoken, a fireball thrown towards his opponents which emanates from his hands, and his devastating Shoryuken, a rising punch strong enough to knock a person out of the fighting arena.
Luke: With such strength, it doesn't seem like anyone can beat him!
Layton: A true gentleman never rushes to a conclusion without first analyzing the facts, Luke. Despite Ryu's undeniable physical strength, his muscle makes him a lot heavier and slower, leaving him more open to attack. Any opponent looking to best this fighter would do well to notice this and use it to their advantage.
Luke: It certainly seems this fight will be an interesting one, won't it Professor?
Layton: Indeed!
Miscellenous
Fighter Icon: The iconic (L) logo.
Possible Echo Fighters: Luke Triton - Some moves specific to Layton may have to be edited a bit, perhaps to account for Luke's ability to speak to animals.
Emmy Altava - Once again, Layton specific moves will probably be edited to account for the fact that Emmy knows martial arts.
Descole - If they're really going for the whole villain thing, Descole would make a great echo fighter, with only minor modifications, probably less than would be required for Luke and Emmy.
Victory Fanfare: Most likely that section in Layton theme where the violins start to sound, but edited so that it doesn't drag on too much.
Classic mode: The congratulations screen could be Layton kneeling next to a grounded opponent, as if researching a fossil. The trophy given to the player will most likely be Young Layton, in all of his messy-haired glory.
All-Star mode: Professor Layton will appear in the 2007 to 2015 group, with his icon appearing first due to his Febuary 15, 2007 debut date. Completing this mode will grant the player a trophy with one of the 5 possible Final Smashes.
Stock icon: A very minimalist version of Layton's head. Changes to match the Color being used in battle.
Character Reveal:
I see a Layton reveal going like this...
We open to a shot of a dense forest, in the typical Layton animation style. The Azran Legacy Theme starts to play (although maybe edited a bit for the trailer). Kat's voice can be heard, saying that she's not too sure of where her father is now, talking about the circumstances of his disapperance. While the voices are playing in the background, we see a letter with a Smash seal on it tucked in to the pocket of a brown coat. This mysterious figure walks through the woods, and we can just get a faint idea of who this is. Eventually, the figure reaches a pair of ruins in the middle of the forest, revealed to be Battlefield. Out of the blue, two fighters step forward, lunging at this mystery fighter. He manages to backflip away from the first attack, but dodging the second will require split second strategy. The screen goes black, and the familiar
(L) logo appears. The puzzle screen appears. It reads "Puzzle No. 68 - A Smashing Situation." Three possible defensive actions are shown, labeled A, B, and C. Instantly visualizing them all, the figure realizes that A is the only one that will lead him to victory. The answer is submitted, the three clicks play, only this time, the back of this fighter is turned to us. "Let's see if I've proven myself..." The voice says, before turning around for the final clip of the animation. However, instead of pointing towards the camera, Layton can be seen lunging forward with a fencing sword in the same manner. The fighter splash reads: "Professor Layton Puzzles the Competition!" It cuts to proper gameplay, showing Layton beating those two fighters in the trailer, as well as other aspects of gameplay, and ending with a final smash. Fade to logo.
